In general, the best paying affiliate programs are those that sell digital goods. Digital goods are the easiest to promote and deliver. There are less problems to deal with and returns are very easy. As an affiliate, remember that you won't have to deal with customer service issues nor with returns or complaints.
In addition, digital goods are easy and cheap to produce, so there are not such high costs of production, nor stock or inventory costs for the merchants.
For these reasons, digital goods merchants are in better position to offer more commissions to their affiliates. So, I think you would want to promote digital goods over physical products.
Commissions from these merchants run from 30, 50 and even 75%. These are the highest on the market.
However, when it comes to looking for the best paying affiliate programs, you should also look for other factors in addition to how high the commissions are. Some programs offer recurring commissions, but of course it all depends on the kind of products you'll be promoting.
Some digital goods are a one time download and there are no immediate or further purchases. But, if the software needs to be updated, upgraded, or with a license, there will probable be recurring commissions. Or, if you're dealing with memberships and subscriptions, you may qualify for recurring commissions.
In this case, you'll need to make sure this is the case. Read and understand well the merchant's terms and conditions, because it might be the case that they won't pay recurring commissions, only the first purchase.
Also make sure that if the merchant is up-selling, meaning that the customer will need to purchase an additional piece of software that will help the current purchase work better, the merchant might not pay commissions on that up-sell.
This is why, it's important to know the product well, ideally you should have used or tried the product before promoting it. You could use the trial versions if the merchant offers them. Or, purchase the product and use it. This way, you'll be in the best position to offer or not the product.
Make sure, the products you'll promote are TOP-NOTch. Why? Because your reputation is on the line, and it takes a lot (online) to gain a good reputation. So, make sure you know well whatever is that you'll be promoting as an affiliate, and not just because they pay good commissions.
Finally, keep in mind that not all the best paying affiliate programs have the best products. All you need to do is your due diligence and find out more about the product and make sure they have good reputation and high quality products for you to promote.
