Server Side Includes (SSI) is a well-known server-side scripting language, used to add the content of one file inside another file. It's employed mainly with online content and it can help make a static HTML website more dynamic. If you need to have a daily quote displayed on many web pages of your site, for instance, you can create a text file and replace the quote inside it daily. All web pages in which this file is included will show the updated quote, so you will not have to edit all of them personally every single time. SSI could also be used to contain the output of simple functions rather than a static file - for instance, the client's IP address, a hit counter or perhaps the current date and time. In this way, you can make your internet site seem far more professional and much more attractive to the site visitors. Pages that employ SSI use a .shtml extension.
Server Side Includes in Shared Website Hosting
You'll be able to use Server Side Includes with all of the shared website hosting
packages that we offer and enable it individually for each domain or subdomain inside of your hosting account. This can be done with an .htaccess file, which needs to be placed in the folder in which you want to use SSI and you need to enter a few lines of code in that file. You can see the code in our Knowledgebase section, so you can simply copy and paste it, as you do not need any programming knowledge to benefit from all capabilities that our services have. In case you have already built your site and you want to employ Server Side Includes later, you have to make certain that you rename the files from .html to .shtml and fix the links on the website, or else SSI won't work.
Server Side Includes in Semi-dedicated Servers
It shall not take you more than a minute to enable Server Side Includes when you have a semi-dedicated server
plan through us. When you choose to activate this function, you have to make an .htaccess file in the root folder for the domain or subdomain in which you would like SSI to be active. In this file, you must copy some code, which you'll see in the FAQ article we have devoted to SSI. You will find the latter within the Help area of your Hosting Control Panel, so you don't need any prior experience with such things. The only two things you need to deal with are renaming all webpages that will utilize Server Side Includes from .html to .shtml and bringing up-to-date each of the links on your site, to make sure they point to the updated files.
